Change management is about applying research based tools and methods to drive adoption.  Whether a software implementation, programmatic change or a merger/acquisition, managing the process of change is critical to success.  Change management is the only portion of a project effort that focuses upon achieving project goals and realizing the expected benefits.  Change management is about getting employees to accept and embrace the change.

Although change management is often one of the smallest overall expenses in a project it is frequently seen as the first cost savings opportunity in reducing the cost of a project.  The only piece of the project focused on getting the return on investment is dropped.  Tossed away at the peril of project success.

Multiple research projects including Prosci’s 2014 study have shown projects with a significant change effort meet or exceed project goals.  Projects with little or no change management effort significantly under achieve project expectations.  Repeatedly when asked what they would do if they could redo a project, the response from project leadership has been: “more change management”.

People will trump strategy every day.  They will not change because you want them to.  They will change when they want to.  That change is a matter of choice and the decision to change is influenced by change management: leadership, communications, involvement and training driven by a deep understanding of your unique culture.

No single, cookie-cutter approach to adoption will work.  All of the unique components of your organization must be considered in developing strategy and plans to get users to adopt, stakeholders to change and in a merger, cultures to sync.
